Conference sessions outline
Session 1 - The Bible's authority
In this session we’ll consider on what grounds we believe something to be true and therefore binding. What ultimately shapes our belief and behaviour? Scripture is not the only authority, but it is our final authority. All other legitimate sources of knowledge are ultimately subject to the final judgment of the Bible. We’ll look at some basic questions, including:
-
What is the Bible?
-
What’s its nature and purpose?
-
Which Bible translation should I use?
Session 2 - Understanding and applying the Bible (part 1)
In this and the following session we’ll look at a number of foundational principles that help us approach the interpretation and application of what we read in scripture. We all have a God-given responsibility to interpret the scriptures, but need to be aware of the subjectivity that influences all interpretation. Examples of the principles we’ll explore include:
-
Distinguishing between what a verse means and why it is significant
-
Avoiding interpretation that puts verses in conflict with what is clearly taught elsewhere
-
Understanding the importance of the genre of the literature you are reading, e.g. Psalms are poetry not history!
Session 3 - Understanding and applying the Bible (part 2)
Continuing from the previous session, further principles to consider include:
-
The crucial role of context when reading the Bible
-
The role of the Holy Spirit in our interpretation of the biblical text
Session 4 - Recognising and avoiding common errors in understanding the Bible
In our final session we’ll look at how to recognise and avoid the most common mistakes in interpreting and applying scripture.
